Most opening trainers start from a book. This one starts from your games. Connect a Chess.com or Lichess username and it reads up to 500 of your games, finds the openings you come out of worse, and gives you tactical puzzles from those same lines, so your practice lands on positions you actually reach.
For every game, Stockfish 18 evaluates the position at the point where the game leaves the opening. Those evaluations are averaged for each opening you played, separately as White and as Black, because the same opening can go well with one colour and badly with the other. A line makes your list when, on average, you come out of it behind.
Each line shows what that looks like in numbers: the average evaluation after the opening, how many games you played it in and how many of them you won. The board shows the position you actually left the opening in, taken from one of those games.
Start Training serves tactical puzzles that arose from that opening, matched to your rating, worst line first. They are real positions from real games in that opening, so the pawn structures and piece placements are the ones you meet at the board.
Each puzzle has a hint if you are stuck, and the coach can explain in plain words why a move works. If a line has no catalogued puzzles at your level, the trainer tells you so instead of quietly filling the set with something else.
Memorising moves helps until your opponent leaves the book. What decides the game after that is whether you recognise the typical tactics of the structure you end up in. Practising tactics from your own openings trains that recognition directly, and it keeps working when the opponent plays something you did not prepare.
