Terms of Service
These Terms govern your use of Lumichess at lumichess.com and in our iOS and Android apps, which together are called the Service. The Service is operated by Lumichess. By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.
1. What the Service is
Lumichess analyses chess games and helps you train. It includes game reports, profile reports, Insights, puzzles, Elo Maxing, the Woodpecker trainer, Learn, live play through third parties, and the AI Coach, which includes Coach Lumi. Some features are free and some need a paid subscription. We may add, change or remove features, and we may change which of them are free.
2. Eligibility and age
The Service is for a general chess audience and is not directed at children under 13. The Coach Lumi chat requires you to be at least 16. By using that feature you confirm you meet the age requirement. If we learn that someone under the required age is using a feature, we may remove their access.
3. Your account
You can analyse games without an account. If you create one, you are responsible for what happens on it and for keeping your sign-in secure. Give us accurate information, keep your email address current, and tell us promptly about any unauthorised use.
One person, one account. Do not share your sign-in, and do not create an account on behalf of someone else without their permission.
You may stop using the Service whenever you like. To delete your account, follow Deleting your account and your data in the Privacy Policy.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to do any of the following.
- Use the Service for anything unlawful, harmful or abusive, or to harass, threaten or harm anyone.
- Break, overload, scrape at scale, reverse engineer, or get unauthorised access to the Service or the systems behind it, or work around a rate limit, quota or entitlement check.
- Use the Service to cheat in a chess game anywhere, including feeding it a position from a game you are currently playing against another person.
- Misuse Coach Lumi: trying to make it produce content outside chess, extract its instructions, get around its safeguards, or generate harmful, hateful, sexual or dangerous content.
- Upload content you do not have the right to share, or infringe anyone's intellectual property.
- Use the Service to build a competing dataset or model, or resell it, without our written permission.
- Impersonate anyone, or enter a chess username in order to misrepresent someone else's results as your own in a way that harms them.
We may suspend or end access that breaks these rules. Cheating in online chess is a matter for the platform you played on, not for us, but we will not help you do it.
5. Coach Lumi and the AI features
Coach Lumi and the Explain features generate text using artificial intelligence, in part through third party providers. Four things follow from that, and all four matter.
- Guidance, not guarantees. Output may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. It is chess guidance and general information, it is not professional advice of any kind, and you should not rely on it as if it were. You are responsible for what you do with it.
- No rating promise. Nothing in the Service is a promise that your rating will rise by any amount, or at all. Any figure, plan, target or projection shown to you is an estimate produced from your own past games, not a commitment.
- Engine limits. Analysis runs a chess engine to a chosen search depth. A deeper search can and sometimes does change a verdict, so a move label, an evaluation or an accuracy score is the engine's reading at that depth rather than objective truth. Accuracy percentages and move classifications are our own scoring method, not a standard, and they are not comparable to another site's numbers.
- Not a crisis service. Coach Lumi is not a crisis, medical, legal, financial or mental health service. If you are in distress or in an emergency, contact a local helpline or emergency services.
6. Third party services
The Service works with third parties, including Chess.com and Lichess for public game data and live play, Google for sign-in, analytics, advertising where shown and the Gemini AI API, Supabase for accounts and database, Vercel for hosting, Cloudflare for storage and edge services, and Dodo Payments for payments. Your use of those parts is also subject to the third party's own terms. Live play connects you to Lichess under Lichess's terms. We are not responsible for third party services, and we cannot promise their data will be accurate or available.
7. Intellectual property
The Service, including its software, design, text, lesson content, artwork and branding, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for its intended purpose. You may not copy, redistribute, sell or create derivative works from it beyond what the law allows without our permission.
You keep whatever rights you already have in content you provide, such as a PGN you paste or feedback you send. By sending it you give us the licence we need to run the Service and to act on it, which for feedback includes using it to improve the product.
Third party components keep their own licences. Chess games and public statistics belong to the players and the platforms they were played on.
8. Subscriptions, billing and renewal
Where a feature is paid, the price, the billing period and what is included are shown at the point of purchase and on the Membership page. Payments are taken by Dodo Payments, which acts as the merchant of record, so your contract for the payment itself is with them. We never see or store your card number.
Prices are shown in the currency at checkout and may include tax depending on where you are. Prices can change on a going forward basis, and a change never affects a period you have already paid for.
Auto-renewal. Monthly and yearly plans renew automatically at the end of each period, at the then current price for that plan, until you cancel. Lifetime is a single payment and never renews.
Cancellation. You can cancel at any time, from the link in your Dodo Payments receipt or by emailing us. Cancelling stops future charges. You keep Premium until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then the account returns to the free tier. Your data stays, although a free account keeps only the most recent profile report.
Refunds. We do not offer a discretionary refund window. Payments already taken are not refunded and a part-used period is not refunded on cancellation, except where the law where you live gives you a right to a refund, which it may. Cancelling stops all future charges immediately. The detail, including the position for consumers in the EU and the UK, is in the Refund Policy.
Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, Premium may be suspended until the payment succeeds. We will not delete your data because of a failed payment.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error free or secure, or that any analysis, label, score, plan or projection it produces will be correct.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, rating or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you for all claims in any twelve month period is limited to the amount you paid us in that period, which for a free account is nothing.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under mandatory consumer law. If you are a consumer, you keep every right your local law gives you, and nothing in these Terms takes it away.
11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us and hold us harmless from claims and costs arising out of your misuse of the Service or your breach of these Terms, to the extent the law allows. This does not apply to consumers where local law says otherwise.
12. Suspension and termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the Service. Where we end a paid subscription for a reason that is not your breach, we refund the unused part of the period you paid for. Sections that by their nature should survive termination, such as intellectual property, disclaimers and limitation of liability, continue to apply.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. When we do we change the date at the top, and for a change that materially affects you we take reasonable steps to tell you before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Service and cancel any subscription.
14. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict of law rules. The courts of India have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer law in your own country gives you the right to bring a claim where you live, in which case that right stands.
Before starting anything formal, please email us. Most problems are a misunderstanding and are faster to fix that way. Email support@lumichess.com with what happened and what you would like done. We acknowledge within 48 hours and aim to resolve within 30 days.
15. Other terms
If any part of these Terms is held unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them as part of a transfer of the business. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, the Cookie Policy and the Refund Policy, are the whole agreement between us about the Service.
16. Copyright and content
If something on Lumichess infringes your rights, email us the page address and what the material is. We remove what should not be there.
